In an age where a horror game has become synonymous with action, The Evil Within appears to be a refreshing revival of the retro survival horror genre. Shinji Mikami, known as the father of the popular Resident Evil series, is the director of this heart-pounding, monster-filled game.
The Evil Within follows Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. As can be seen from the gameplay trailer, the meat of the game focuses around the strategic and careful maneuvering around the environment to avoid getting spotted by the monsters that killed the detective’s buddies. Guns, of course, exist in the game but I am guessing that bullets will be something the player will want to save up. Kind of like the early Resident Evil games.
Rejoice, fellow survival horror fans! It’s hard to tell from just one short trailer whether the game will be close to critical success The Last of Us (with its horror genre mixed with action-adventure), or if it will be more ‘Resident Evil meets Metal Gear Solid’ (you know, with the sneaking around). Nevertheless, The Evil Within looks to be a promising addition to the steadily-growing line of quality horror games.
The game will be released in 2014 on Microsoft Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
